The Missing Piece

When I was younger a close friend of mine nearly passed away from a disease that was supposed to leave him completely disabled. He fought hard and made a miraculous recovery.

Fast forward to two years ago, his doctor told him his kidneys were failing. He would need a transplant, or he wouldn't survive. His family immediately got tested for compatibility. They weren't able to. He needed to find somebody in the next few months. Being close, I figured I'd get tested. I didn't have much hope of being a match, but I wanted to try anyway.

After a few weeks of testing, and a few visits, I was told that I could donate. So, last summer I had the chance to share life with one of my closest friends. It was an amazing experience, and I know that I benefited just as much as he did.

Knowing that I gave the gift of life makes me regret only one thing. That I can't do it twice.
